Baby's First Christmas and Other Stockings

Make Baby's First Christmas Stocking! It's simple to make a special First Christmas stocking. Use our directions and pattern below to make a special Christmas stocking. Involve your older kids and have them make their own Christmas stockings a well! What a great famly activity!

What you will need to make a Baby's First Christmas Stocking:

  • Stocking Pattern (we have our own pattern Here that may be enlarged as you wish)

  • Material of your choice (Velvet and high quality Felt are great choices)

  • Sewing Machine or Fabric Glue

  • Piping, Baubles, Fabric Paints, Glitter, Glitter glue and other items to decorate the stocking

It's really quite simple!  Trace the pattern onto your chosen material and cut the pattern out.  Lay the material together with the inner-side of the material facing in.  Sew or use fabric glue to attach the material and make the stocking!

Once the first Christmas stocking has been created, turn the stocking "right side out" so that the soft lovely side is displayed. Your next step is to decorate as you like!  For example, using Glitter glue or fabric paints, write Baby's Name and the First Christmas Year on the cuff; create an iron-on photo transfer of baby and add that to the stocking.  Sew on items such as tiny wooden rattles, jingle bells or soft cloth reindeer.

Baby's First Christmas Stocking - The Tradition of the Christmas Stocking

The stockings were hung by the chimney with care.  This is a rather odd tradition when you think of it's history.  Why would anyone hang stockings by the chimney?  Centuries ago, hanging items of clothing by the fireplace (chimney) was the only way to dry washed items when hanging clothing outside was not an option.

It is thought that the tradition of hanging stockings came about from the Dutch who used to leave their clogs by the fireplace on Christmas Eve.  The Dutch children would fill their clogs with hay or straw for the reindeer to eat and they would leave food for St. Nicholas as well.  Eventually, the clogs were replaced with the tradition of hanging stockings.
